Amazon raises wages for qualifying US hourly employees and launches new grocery discount to help employees save at Amazon and Whole Foods Market. The announcement was the convergence of higher hourly pay and daily retail discounts.
Effective Sept. 27, Amazon will boost the hourly base rate for all full-time hourly employees in the company’s core operations division to at least $20 an hour. The $1 extension to the hourly base rate will be granted to employees that are engaged in activities including order picking and packing sorting transportation and delivery operations. Per Amazon, the new base rate will bring the average hourly pay for these employees to close to $24.
Including benefits, average hourly total compensation for jobs eligible for core operations will be more than $32/hr. Due to this wage investment, Amazon announced that the cost will exceed $1.5 billion. This has been part of a larger attempt to boost wages for front line jobs at Amazon.
The pay raise also includes a new grocery subsidy, which will be offered to all Amazon workers in the United States, fulfillment center employees, corporate office employees, delivery workers, and even Whole Foods Market employees.
Starting October 1, individuals will get 10% off of eligible groceries and everyday items bought through Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market online. Individuals will also received 20% off in-store purchase at Whole Foods Market and Daily Shop locations. Eligible products may included fresh produce, dairy products features cleaning supplies toiletries pet foods, diapers, and baby formula.
The in-store discount also will be for those buying from the hot and salad bars at Whole Foods Market. Some exclusions like alcohol and gift cards will apply. Amazon reported there will be no minimum purchase and unlimited savings for employees.
The discount on groceries will be linked to the employee’s Amazon account and can be used with any other Prime discount, coupon or promotional offering on that item. With this, employees may also be eligible for come more discounts when the price of one item is already reduced.
Said Amazon executives, the grocer benefit was intend to help employees offset costs that a household had to incur on a regular basis. Groceries generally are bought on a regular basis so small discounts could add up over time. The benefit links together all of Amazons retail, delivery and grocery business with one employee orientated program.
Apart from pay increases and a grocery discount, Amazon is planning to launch Day 1 Financial, a banking benefit offered via First Tech Federal Credit Union. Implementation is anticipated later in 2023 and will extend banking services like fee-free accounts (no monthly maintenance or overdraft charges) to eligible workers and their loved ones. The firm has assured eligible family members will be granted continued association with the credit union following an employee’s departure.
The most recent updates expand existing perks including health care for qualified workers, complimentary Prime memberships, paid maternity & paternity leave, a retirement account, & Career Choice education assistance.
